Videogames
A cliché: For me, there’s no such thing as a small videogame. But that’s the truth. I tackle every project with the utmost professionalism, dedication, precision, perseverance, and above all, a heart full of love for a job well done. My aim is to make the Spanish version the best it can be. But here comes the snag. There are audiovisual projects that etch themselves into your memory, whether it’s because of the amazing folks you’ve teamed up with, the theme, or the sheer volume of words. To give you a taste, here’s a teaser.
Fae farm (2023)
What a delight it was to translate this game! It took a heap of imagination to capture the enchanting essence of nearly all the terminology, brimming with made-up names of plants, critters, potions, spells, sprites, animated objects, fabricated languages, characters who spoke in rhyme… It was over six months of squeezing every drop of creativity from the brain, but it was worth every second. And a thousand thanks to @Ana Ávalos Reyes for contributing so many brilliant ideas to the project! As a fun fact, I absolutely adored the inclusion of non-binary gender in the character selection.
EVE online (2022)
Over a million words. More than a year’s journey. An entire cosmos to explore. The mission: to craft a Spanish version that would captivate both rookie players and battle-hardened capsuleers. Fortunately, we had the guidance of the game’s stellar Spanish-speaking community and a dream team lineup: @Cristina Pérez, Natalia García Guerrero, Daniel Antón, Jesús Álvarez, Luis Miguel García Ramírez, Paula Osorio, Izaskun García Ugarte, Sonia Alonso, Florencia Romero, Lola Montes… We poured our hearts and sweat into this project, and we’d like to believe we’ve soared past the challenge. Hold on, do we say “warp” or “warp drive”?
Rainbow Billy: The curse of the leviathan (2021)
I recall tackling a whopping 200,000 words in just over a month. How did I pull it off? All thanks to a dream team of professional translators who made it a breeze: @Ángela Fernández, Carlos Besga Arcauz, Daniel Antón Martínez, Daniel Romo Gutiérrez, Natalia García Guerrero, and Sonia Prado Varela. I hold this game dear for the human values it imparts and because it was one of the first where we decided to embrace fully inclusive language, sidestepping linguistic debates, to highlight the non-binary nature of Billy, the main character.
Small town murders (2020)
What a laugh we had! I crack up just thinking about it. The dialogues in this mobile game are a riot of creativity, sarcasm, parody, and dark humor. Each update was a new case to crack. And just like that, we spent over a year unraveling mysteries with the invaluable help of super detectives @Irene Igualada and Ángela Fernández.
F1 saga
(2010-2015)
When you’re lucky enough to team up someone who’s on the same track, everything runs like a well-oiled machine (pun totally intended). This magic happened between 2010 and 2015, when @Marta Rodríguez and I took the wheel for translating and reviewing the F1 saga… and Antonio Lovato became our best ally. Too bad things skidded off course later on… My personal choice? F1 2010. Marta’s? You gotta ask her.
