Subtitles
Capturing the script’s nuances without turning the movie into a reading marathon is quite the feat. If you weren’t the summary whiz in high school, you’re in for a challenge. Between 2001 and 2004, I was almost exclusively devoted to translating, editing and reviewing subtitles for movies, series, documentaries, and bonus material for the leading subtitling companies in the London area at the time: @Technicolor, Visiontext, ECI, Sdi Media Group. It was the heyday of DVDs. Do they still make those relics?
Young Wallander (Season 1, 2020)
I cherish the memories of this series for two main reasons: first, it was the very first full series I subtitled into Spanish for @Netflix (I was a total nervous wreck—like jelly!); and second, I was lucky enough to have my work reviewed by @Emma Carballal (who, in my humble opinion, is one of the finest translators I know). And honestly, I’m super proud of the end result.
Tony Parker: The Final Shot (2021)
If we blend my passion for audiovisual translation with my love for basketball, that pretty much sums it up. And get this: Tony Parker admits in the documentary that the Spanish team was superior to France, and if it weren’t for Pau Gasol and his friends, would be sporting a lot more medals. That’s some real talk! As a basketball player, I might be past my prime, but I hope to have at least 25 more years in the world of translation!
